David Archuleta

Mr. Archuperfect is back, making America’s ears (and, uh, loins?) tingle with glee. No lyric flubs to report, although we did get to see a clip from last week’s mess again, thanks to the evil “Idol” producers who included it in David’s preperformance package. (I’m sure Daddy Archuleta loved that decision.) But all memories of Davidgate were flushed out of my brain as soon as the teen started his pitch-perfect rendition of “The Long and Winding Road,” although, like the Beatles’ legendary concert at Shea Stadium, it was hard to hear most of it over the constant screams from the audience. If only the new stage setup came equipped with a cold shower for the mosh pit.

David Archuleta Top 11 Review
Well, well, well Archuleta fans. Where, oh where to begin with tonight’s show. It was certainly an enjoyable two hours……and not because the singing or the performances were really any good.  I guess I just have to start with the absolute best of the night!  It was most certainly at around the 20-25 minute mark or so that David Archuleta came back with a monumentally soul-stirring rendition of “The Long and Winding Road.”

I have something to say about each contestant (believe me, as painful as some of their performances were, they still deserve a mentioning……..because I’m going to verbally skewer them), but first things first…

……….David Archuleta was amazing tonight! The thoughts that must have crossed his mind throughout the week whilst getting ready, the mental preparation, the memorization process, the rehearsals with the band…everything seemed to come together perfectly into a compact 1′45″ of sheer vocal perfection! To all the naysayers…..yeah yeah yeah, I know I speak from a biased standpoint, but here’s the thing. I kinda know what I’m talking about, based on my 15+ years of playing as a freelance musician and teaching middle schoolers. Yes folks, David brought it big time tonight. “The Long and Winding Road” is NOT an easy song by any means, and it takes a huge degree of emotion and vulnerability to pull it off. David immediately took hold of that song, commanded the stage, and delivered the heartfelt pathos contained within. Great job, David!!! I think you gained a lot more fans with tonight’s performance!

“The Long and Winding Road” is a ballad written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon/McCartney) that originally appeared on The Beatles’ album Let It Be. It became The Beatles’ last #1 song in the United States on 13 June 1970, and was their last real single. The song was covered by many artists, including George Michael in April 2002.

Listen to a potential cover that David Archuleta will do.

After the performance:
David amazed the judges once again after a not-so-great performance last week. Even Simon enjoyed it.

David performed “We Can Work It Out” during the Top 12 round of American Idol.  The song was released by the Beatles on October, 20 1965 and then covered by Stevie Wonder in 1970; the rendition David Archuleta chose to perform.  Not being his strongest performance during and forgetting the lyrics a few times, he still managed to keep his nerves in tact and sound amazing.  Re-watch his performance below:
